Aluminum MIG: fast, for production work and medium-to-heavy plate
MIG feeds layer-wound wire continuously at a high deposition rate, suiting plate of 3 mm and above and volume production: frames, trailers, tanks, structural work. Aluminum MIG normally runs in spray transfer or pulsed mode rather than short-circuit transfer. The challenge is that aluminum wire is soft and prone to birdnesting — the feeding arrangement (a spool gun or a push-pull system, with U-groove drive rolls and a PTFE liner; essential over longer feed distances) and the quality of the wire itself decide success or failure. That is exactly why imported wire — stable feeding, tight diameter tolerance — is worth the investment.
Aluminum TIG: refined, for thin sheet and cosmetic parts
TIG adds cut-length rod by hand and uses alternating current (AC), whose electrode-positive half cycle breaks up the aluminum oxide film. The result is a fine, attractive bead with well-controlled heat input, suiting sheet under 3 mm, tubing, bicycle frames and parts with high cosmetic requirements. The downsides are speed and the level of welder skill required.

Is every grade available in both MIG and TIG form?

Aluminum MIG keeps feeding badly — what should I check?
Start with three things: whether the drive rolls are U-groove (not V-groove), whether the liner is PTFE, and the diameter tolerance and layer-winding quality of the wire itself. Over longer feed distances, consider a spool gun or push-pull setup.
